Day 2 Mount Rushmore

We went to church at the Frontier Ward. I am not sure if they are just the friendliest people we have ever met or if they were trying to recruit new blood. My favorite quote from the meeting was from a man who moved to Wyoming from Arizona. He said, " Many are cold , but few are frozen".

We spent most of the day driving north in Wyoming. We stopped at the Woodcarving Museum in South Dakota. It had some interesting mechanical carvings. Just after we got inside it started to rain like crazy. I was a little worried about our trip to Mount Rushmore but the sky cleared just as we got into town. The drive into this area was amazing.

We stayed at a little motel called the Washington Inn. It filled the girls one criterion- it had a pool. Unfortunately we never got to use it. We went to eat at a place called the Trail Drive Cafe because it had a sign that said Buffalo Ribs. When we pulled up there were no other cars there. I told Kurt that was not a good sign but we decided to brave it anyway. Big mistake! At least the girls can say they have now eaten buffalo.

We then went up the road to Mount Rushmore. We went through the museum, walked the trail, saw the movies and of course took the pictures. My favorite part was the patriotic program and the lighting of the monument at night. I would tell you I was moved to tears but you all know what a big boob I am so that is not hard to do. It was definitely the highlight of the day. There is so much more to do here but it will have to be another time if we are going to make it to D.C. by the 4th. Still haven't heard back from Congressman Matheson's aide. Hopefully she will be in the office tomorrow.

  2. Good choice Emily! In Troy's class, his students read an article about the Native American carving. It is very interesting. Glad you had the chance to see it in person.
